Fix a Microsoft Access connection

If AI Zeny cannot find the 64-bit Microsoft Access driver, your PC may be missing the Runtime it needs. Check your Office setup, install the compatible Runtime and test your BUSY connection again.

Check compatibility first

This guide is for BUSY companies using Microsoft Access (.mdb or .accdb). SQL Server connections do not need this driver.

When this guide helps

Missing Access driver or database engine

Use these steps when the connection error reports a missing Microsoft Access ODBC driver, an unregistered Access provider or asks for Access Database Engine 2016. A folder, permission or database error can have a different cause.

Microsoft 365 Access Runtime includes the Access Database Engine. It is a free Microsoft download; you do not need to buy a Microsoft 365 subscription or product key for the Runtime. It is separate from the .NET runtime included with AI Zeny.

1. Check your Office setup

In Word or Excel, open File → Account → About Word / About Excel and look for 32-bit or 64-bit. A 64-bit Windows PC can still have 32-bit Office. If you are unsure which installation type you have, check with your IT person before continuing.

No Office installed
Use the x64 Runtime on your 64-bit Windows PC.
64-bit Click-to-Run Office
Setup aligns the Runtime with your existing Office version. For example, Office 2021 can result in Access 2021 Runtime.
32-bit Office
Stop before installing x64. Ask your IT person or AI Zeny support to check compatibility. Do not uninstall Office or force the installation; 32-bit Runtime alone does not meet AI Zeny’s 64-bit driver requirement.
Office installed using Windows Installer (MSI)
Microsoft 365 Access Runtime is incompatible with this setup. Have your IT person review the Office installation before making changes.

Office 2019 Volume License can also prevent outside apps from using the engine. If that is your setup, ask IT to review Microsoft’s compatibility notes.

2. Download, install and reconnect

Microsoft 365 Access Runtime — 64-bit

Download Access Runtime x64

Continue only after the compatibility check above. If the direct download is unavailable, use the English x64 option on Microsoft’s Runtime download page.

  1. Step 1: Save your work and close the apps

After checking Office compatibility above, save your work and close AI Zeny and all Office apps. Use the Windows PC where AI Zeny connects to your BUSY data. Keep it connected to the internet.
  2. Step 2: Download the 64-bit Runtime from Microsoft

Use the Microsoft download button on this page to get Microsoft 365 Access Runtime in English, 64-bit (x64). Save the installer in your Downloads folder. The filename may be OfficeSetup.exe; do not choose the 32-bit (x86) download for this guide.
  3. Step 3: Check the publisher and run the installer

Right-click the downloaded file → Properties → Digital Signatures. Select Microsoft Corporation → Details and check that the digital signature is valid. Then right-click the file → Run as administrator. Approve the Windows permission prompt only if it identifies Microsoft as the verified publisher. If the publisher cannot be verified, stop and download again from Microsoft.
  4. Step 4: Let installation finish

Keep the internet connected while setup downloads and installs the Runtime. If setup reports an Office compatibility conflict, stop and follow the guidance above. When setup finishes, restart Windows if requested.
  5. Step 5: Reopen AI Zeny and test the connection

Open AI Zeny, unlock the app and open the BUSY company’s connection settings. Select Microsoft Access, choose the correct BUSY data folder and use Test connection. Save the company settings after the test succeeds.

3. If the connection still fails

  • Check that setup completed and that the installed Runtime is 64-bit. Open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps to find the installed product; its name may match your existing Office version.
  • For an advanced driver check, open ODBC Data Sources (64-bit) → Drivers from Windows Start. Look for Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb, *.accdb). You do not need to create a data source (DSN).
  • Recheck the BUSY data folder. It must be the correct folder and readable by the AI Zeny service account, including when it is on a network share.
  • If the error remains, contact AI Zeny support with the exact error text, Windows version and Office bit version. Do not send your BUSY database, passwords or API tokens.

Older error messages may mention Access Database Engine 2016. This guide uses Microsoft 365 Access Runtime; there is no need to look for the exact Runtime build installed on another PC.
